WUKA Recommends
Written by autistic author Robyn Steward, this is a detailed guide for young people aged 9 to 16 on the basics of menstruation. Created in consultation with young people, an online survey, and a group of medical professionals, it’s designed to make periods less scary and overwhelming.
BOOK DESCRIPTION
"Changes during puberty, such as the onset of periods, are challenging for those on the autism spectrum. Written from experience by an autistic woman, this straightforward guide to periods helps the reader to prepare in great detail, from hygiene to pain medication and sensory experiences to mood swings."
This practical book promotes the idea that everyone either has periods or knows someone who does. It reduces the anxiety children often feel when asking for help and provides direct advice on:

This book is very helpful for both child and parents.
I only had a quick look as I bought it for my autistic granddaughter and passed it to her mum.
Although she is hopefully a few years away from her periods it doesn't hurt to read it to help approach any problems when they do occur.
I talked about periods our autistic daughter a few years ago but wasn't quite sure how much of what I said had sunk in, so recently I brought it up again with this book, along with period pants. I want to make her ready when she starts school in September. She has enjoyed reading the book and is now more receptive to the idea.
I got this book for my 11-year-old daughter. She is autistic but loves reading books. I got this because I know she is about to start her period anytime soon. I wanted to give her the best start to her period. Got this book and tween period pants for her. We feel we are ready.
Thank you for writing this book.
